Joseph Zhou

Jin-Rong (Joseph) Zhou is currently Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Nutrition/Metabolism Laboratory at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is also a member of the Nutrition curriculum Committee in Division of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School.

Dr Zhou earned his PhD in Nutritional Sciences in 1994 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, studied Bio-nutrition and Cancer as a postdoctoral student at Harvard from 1994-1996, winning the NIH National Individual Research Service Award from 1996-1999. He earned his BS and MS from Nanjing University in China. He has served on over 20 study sections and special emphasis panels for the NIH, and several review panels for other national and international organizations including USDA, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Italian Association for Cancer Research, Singapore National Medical Research Council and the National Science Foundation of China.

Dr. Zhou’s research priority is to investigate the complex issues dealing with nutrition and health. The long-term goal of his research is to identify bioactive dietary and nutritional components for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, such as cancer and metabolic disorders. Dr Zhou is the recipient of over 30 research grants from the NIH, Department of Defense, and several other funding organizations, and has published about 60 peer-reviewed original research papers, review papers and book chapters/editorials. He has served as a peer reviewer for over 30 scientific journals, is the Guest Editor for American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the Managing Editor for Frontiers in Biosciences, the Field Editor for the journal Functional Foods in Health and Disease, and on the Editorial Board for several other scientific journals.
