Associate Prof Gilles Guillemin has been a Senior Research Officer at the Centre for Immunology and Applied Medical Research in St Vincent’s Hospital (Australia) for the last 14 years. He is the Head of the Neuroinflammation research group in the Pharmacology Department at the University of New South Wales. He is also an Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney and the Visiting Senior Research Fellow at The Australasian Research Institute, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga. Dr Guillemin has published over 90 papers and edited a book, “Neuroanatomie fonctionnelle: La cellule microgliale”. He has also contributed to 12 other books and presented at over 80 conferences.
Dr Guillemin is heavily involved in tryptophan research, as his group is one of the world’s leading research groups working on neuroactive metabolites derived from tryptophan. He is also on the executive committees of the International Society for Tryptophan Research and the Neurotoxicity Society. His current research interest is studying the involvement of tryptophan catabolism (via the kynurenine pathway) in human neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and brain tumours.
